B. Arch

KRVIA offers a five year degree programme, recognized by the Council of Architecture (COA) under the aegis of the University of Mumbai. The course culminates with a Design Dissertation and a term of practical training.

The Course Structure
The overall course structure is formulated within the framework of the Mumbai University Syllabus. The course is broadly divided into the following three categories that inform each other and cannot be seen as independent.

History and Theory Design Technology
Apart from the mandatory courses there is an array of extra-curricular courses and activities.

Electives are offered in the second and fourth year. A student has the choice of taking any two electives each year. Electives offered in the second year are photography, ceramics, theater, building technology etc., while those offered in the fourth year include construction management, film appreciation and theory, urban theory, conservation etc.

Encounter is a weekly interactive session where practitioners from various fields of culture and technology are invited by the college to present their work and culminating in a discussion with students.

Study trips are conducted every year for Years 1-4. The study undertaken is then integrated into the design studios. More..

The First Year study tour investigates the ways of living and the practices of communities located in rural areas. The attempt is to understand patterns of social, economical and cultural systems and their reflection in the physical fabric of the place. Sketching and diagrammatic representations are encouraged as part of the study.

The Second Year visits towns and cities in the country to study pre-colonial architecture in traditional contexts. Detailed measure drawings are the focus and method of study.

The Third Year students explore institutional architecture in urban and rural contexts. The students map the city through its institutions and study their relationship to the city through drawings, maps, photomontages, graphic novels, documents, etc.

In the Fourth Year study trip students are exposed to ways of understanding the city. The study looks at urban patterns and phenomena to develop tools through which students can understand the production of built form within complex cultural milieus.

Internship programmes are set up by the school for different years where students are exposed to practices outside the realm of academics. More.

The Final internship program is part of the University course structure. In the second semester of the fifth year, students work in registered architecture firms for a period of 4 months. At the end of the internship a viva-voce is conducted by external examiners of University of Mumbai.

Intermediary internship programs are conducted in the second and third year of B.Arch. These are not a part of the University course structure but are encouraged by the school. In the Second Year program students work with non-government organizations, artists, social activists, etc within allied fields for a period of one month. In the Third Year program students have to work with registered architectural firms for a period of one and a half month.

Design Cell internship program is where students of senior classes can work with the school’s own Design Cell on various projects of research and consultancy.
